It continuously amazes me how fast road cars have become, even compared to their counterparts from just a few years back. The Carrera GT laps much slower at 7.28

The cars themselves are impressive, but the tires make a yuuuuuge difference as well.
A spot check of the ones on the Porch show that they are DOT competition tires. Just enough tread to be street legal, but “not recommended for use in wet conditions”. They al so a tread wear rating of 80, and run ~$450 each for the fronts and ~$600 each for the rears .

Tire compounds are a huge reason, also, advances in computer controlled traction aids have made some cars seem way faster than they should be in the last 5-10 years. (example: there are a few FWD “hot hatches” with launch control that put up some crazy arse 0-60 times. They’re all running in a special computer mode and with PS4 or whatever tires)

back in 2006 there were a few rumors of a carrera GTR. The source was from several long terms owners who had been contacted about first dibs. Porsche wanted to wait a bit so as not to piss off folks that had just dropped 400k., then the carpocalyse happened and the plan was canceled.
I would love to know how that would work with a bit more downforce and traction control.

I’ve never heard of that, but wow would that have been a sight to see! I wonder if Porsche still has the renders and if they could be persuaded to release them. I wonder if it would have just had more aero like the Gemballa Mirage GT or more of a 911 GT1 thing. Either way, wow. Thanks for sharing.
